In the Buddhist scripture ‘Abhidharma Mahāvibhāṣa Śāstra’, the following passage appears: “When two men were pulling a silk thread made in the kingdom of Kāśi, another man came and cut it in a single stroke. In that moment, 64 kṣaṇas (instants) had passed.”
The breaking of the silk thread is considered to last 64 kṣaṇas, which equals about 1/75 of a second. In other words, one kṣaṇa is 0.013 seconds.
0.013 is a spatial, immersive media art work inspired by this concept of the kṣaṇa. It visualizes the experience of “Joomadeung” (life flashing before one’s eyes), addressing the fleeting boundary between life and death that anyone may encounter. The work allows the audience to directly undergo this near-death vision. Life and death are inseparable; the question of death is tied to self-understanding and self-realization. Ultimately, how should we confront death?
