Misanthrope reimagines Molière’s classic as a contemporary love story unfolding entirely in the back parking lot of Le Pain du Chocolat, a strip club surrounded by the worn beauty of urban decay. Alceste, the club’s manager, lashes out at anyone he sees as hypocritical or self-satisfied, yet finds himself devoted to Célimène, the club’s most magnetic and beloved showgirl. Each night, she slips into a new persona, earning her living by performing desire and affection—a reality Alceste cannot accept.

Unable to reconcile his love with his contempt for the world she inhabits, Alceste urges Célimène to leave stripping behind and become the sincere, gentle woman he imagines her to be. But Célimène refuses to be reshaped by his ideals, finally telling him, “No, you don’t really love me as you ought.” The play asks where hypocrisy truly lies: in Célimène, whose performances may reveal more truth than they conceal, or in Alceste, a self-proclaimed enemy of falseness who destroys something beautiful in the name of honesty.

The production stands as a modest tribute to sex workers—their resilience, defiance, and integrity in the face of judgment and hostility. Its video design embraces the aesthetics of degraded media, drawing from live smartphone cameras, VHS distortion, and AI-generated visual detritus to build a world that is raw, unstable, and deeply contemporary.
